Overview

Published by Orbitz Holidays · Last reviewed

Lakshadweep is a scatter of small coral islands in the Arabian Sea, and it feels genuinely remote in a way few Indian destinations still do. Only a handful of the inhabited islands are open to visitors, and every traveller needs an entry permit before boarding. What you come for is the lagoon: a shallow, glass-clear band of water inside the reef, warm enough to snorkel for hours, with coral gardens, reef fish and turtles just off the sand. Agatti has the airstrip and most arrivals pass through it; Kavaratti is the administrative centre; Minicoy sits far to the south with its own Maldivian-influenced language and culture. There is very little nightlife and almost no shopping, and the days are built around water, boats and the reef. It suits divers, snorkellers, honeymooners and anyone happy to slow down completely.

Places to visit

Bangaram Island, Lakshadweep
Bangaram Island, Lakshadweep
Island2–3 days

Bangaram Island

An uninhabited, tear-shaped island set inside a wide lagoon and run as a single low-key resort island. There is no village and no market, and little to do beyond swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, diving on the nearby reefs and walking the sand, which is precisely the appeal.

Agatti Island, Lakshadweep
Island1–2 days

Agatti Island

The island with the airstrip, and the arrival point for almost every visitor. A long, narrow strip of coconut palm with pale lagoon water on either side, it has a fishing village, a few guest houses and dive operations, and good snorkelling straight off the beach.

Kavaratti, Lakshadweep
Kavaratti, Lakshadweep
IslandFull day

Kavaratti

The administrative headquarters of the territory and its busiest island, with offices, schools, a marine aquarium and the much-photographed Ujra mosque. Visitors snorkel and kayak in the lagoon, take glass-bottom boat rides over the coral and see something of everyday island life.

Minicoy Island

The southernmost inhabited island, curved around a large lagoon, with a culture and language closer to the Maldives than to the mainland. A tall lighthouse can be climbed for the view, and the island is known for its tuna fishery and its traditional rowing boats.

Water sports (snorkelling / scuba)

The main activity across the islands. Shallow, clear lagoon water makes snorkelling straightforward even for beginners, while dive centres run reef dives and introductory courses. Kayaking, glass-bottom boats and first-time sessions in the lagoon are usually available, though everything depends on sea conditions.

Lagoon cruises, Lakshadweep

Beach2–3 hours

Lagoon cruises

Boat outings across the sheltered water inside the reef, in traditional or motorised craft and often timed for sunset. The lagoon shades from near-white to deep turquoise as the depth changes, and trips usually pause for a swim or a snorkel stop over the coral.

House-reef snorkelling, Lakshadweep
Marine experienceHalf day

House-reef snorkelling

Shallow lagoon reefs make it possible to observe coral gardens and reef fish from approved swimming and boat-access points. Travellers visit for clear water and an accessible introduction to island marine life; follow local safety instructions and reef-protection rules.

Scuba-diving sites

Guided dives explore reef walls and coral habitats around islands open to visitors. The appeal is underwater visibility and varied marine life; exact sites depend on certification, weather, operator availability and the permitted island itinerary.

Getting there from India

How to reach

Air

Agatti is the principal air gateway, normally reached via Kochi. Onward island movement follows the permitted itinerary and available boat transfers.

Rail

There is no railway to Lakshadweep. Rail travellers can reach Kochi or another confirmed mainland departure point before continuing by air or authorised ship.

Road

No road links reach the islands from mainland India. Local movement is by boat and within individual islands, subject to permits, weather and published operations.

Know before you go

Travel essentials

Currency

The Indian rupee. There are very few ATMs and card acceptance is limited, so carry enough cash for the whole trip from the mainland.

Language

Malayalam is spoken on most islands and Mahl on Minicoy. Hindi and English are understood by resort staff, permit officials and dive guides.

Time difference

India uses one national time zone, so no clock change is required. Daylight hours vary by season and longitude.

Weather

Tropical and warm throughout. The calm, clear season runs roughly October to May, while the south-west monsoon from June closes water sports and disrupts sailings.

Connectivity

Coverage is limited and BSNL is the most dependable network. A submarine fibre link has improved island broadband, but expect slow data and quiet stretches offline.

Food & culture

Tuna, coconut milk, rice and curry leaf dominate Lakshadweep meals, with fish often smoked, dried or curried. The islands are almost entirely Muslim, and visitors should dress and behave modestly in villages. Minicoy has distinct Maldivian cultural links, local dishes and the Mahl language.

Entry requirements

Permits & ID

Visitors require an entry permit for Lakshadweep, and access is limited to islands and services approved for the itinerary. Arrange the permit and confirmed transport before departure.

Small details, smoother days

Traveller tips

  1. Every visitor, Indian citizens included, needs an entry permit before travel, and it is tied to a specific island and a confirmed stay, so start the paperwork early.
  2. Only a limited set of islands is open to tourists, and you cannot island-hop freely once you arrive.
  3. Access is by flight or ship to Agatti and then by boat, and every leg is weather-dependent, so keep a spare day in hand, particularly either side of the monsoon.
  4. Alcohol is restricted across the inhabited islands; do not plan on buying any, and check what applies to the island you are staying on.
  5. The inhabited islands are conservative and Muslim, so swimwear belongs on the resort beach or in the lagoon and covered clothing is expected in the villages.
  6. Carry reef-safe sunscreen, a rash guard and your own mask if you have one, as shops are minimal; the reef is protected, so never stand on or touch the coral.

Useful answers

Lakshadweep FAQs

October to May is generally the best period for Lakshadweep, with calmer seas and more reliable boat and water-activity conditions. December to March is especially comfortable for a beach-focused stay. The southwest monsoon, roughly June to September, brings rougher seas and can disrupt inter-island transport, so travel during that period needs additional flexibility.
