Build the days around what matters
A group of sandstone temples built by the Chandela dynasty and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, known for the density and craftsmanship of their carved figures. The Western group is the largest and best preserved, and a guide helps make sense of iconography that is only partly erotic.
A large tiger reserve of sal forest and open grassy meadows in the Maikal hills, and the stronghold of the hard-ground barasingha. Visits are by shared or private jeep on fixed zone routes, morning and afternoon, always accompanied by a forest guide.

The only hill station in Madhya Pradesh, set on a plateau in the Satpura range among sandstone ravines, waterfalls and caves. Visitors take permitted vehicles or walk to the viewpoints, bathe at the falls and climb to hilltop shrines; much of it lies within a biosphere reserve.
A cluster of natural rock shelters in sandstone outcrops, painted in red and white with prehistoric hunts, animals, dancers and later horsemen. A marked walking circuit links the main shelters across the hillside, and the site is inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A hilltop fortress above the city, entered by a long ramp that passes rock-cut Jain figures. Inside are the tiled Man Singh Palace, temples, water tanks and a small museum, with wide views over Gwalior. A sound-and-light programme runs in the evenings in season.
